If you missed The Sandbox Collective’s Spring Awakening this year, you’ll have another chance in February 2027. The company has announced a limited rerun to open its 2027 season at The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater, Rockwell Center, Makati City.

There’s reason to be curious about a return. In my February 2026 review of Spring Awakening, I wrote about a production that grew steadier as it unfolded, with early vocal roughness giving way to an ensemble that found its footing. “Left Behind” made me cry. I also had reservations about some sightlines and lighting choices. A rerun gives us a chance to see how the staging develops.

The adults have answers. They just won’t give them.

Set in late 19th-century Germany, Spring Awakening follows teenagers trying to understand sex and their changing bodies while the adults around them demand obedience. Wendla wants to know where babies come from. Moritz struggles with puberty and pressure at school. The consequences of leaving them uninformed drive the story.

Steven Sater wrote the book and lyrics, with music by Duncan Sheik, adapting Frank Wedekind’s play. The period setting comes with a rock score; the musical won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Pamintuan and Yatco lead the rerun

Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan directs, with musical direction by Ejay Yatco. The announced creative team also includes choreographer Nunoy Van Den Burgh, intimacy director Missy Maramara, set designer Wika Nadera, costume designer Raven Ong, assistant director Gabbi Campomanes, and lighting designer D Cortezano.

Sandbox reports that the staging received 17 Gawad Buhay citations. The company also says the rerun will continue its education and advocacy initiatives. Our earlier coverage looked at the 2026 run’s post-show talkbacks. Details of the activities for 2027 are still to come.

Tickets and the 2027 cast

The 2027 cast, exact performance dates, and ticket prices are still to come. Sandbox says ticket information will follow.
