Avanti, Sempre Avanti: Galleria Duemila at 50 and the Future of Philippine Modern Art
There are anniversaries designed to commemorate.
And then there are anniversaries that recommit.
In January 2026, Galleria Duemila celebrates its 50th anniversary with an exhibition that refuses nostalgia and leans instead toward continuity, movement, and conviction. Titled AVANTI, SEMPRE AVANTI / FORWARD, ALWAYS FORWARD, the show runs from January 13 to March 14, 2026, marking five decades of sustained influence as the longest-running art gallery in the Philippines.
This landmark exhibition situates Galleria Duemila not as a relic of Philippine modern art history, but as an active force that continues to shape how art is seen, valued, and discussed today.
50 Years of Philippine Modern Art, Seen Through a Different Lens
Founded in 1975, Galleria Duemila has consistently championed Philippine modern and contemporary art outside the logic of trends and market pressure. At the heart of this philosophy is its founder, Silvana Ancellotti-Diaz, whose relationships with artists often grew into lifelong collaborations and friendships.
Many of the 37 featured artists in Avanti, Sempre Avanti share this deeply personal history with the gallery. Together, they helped shape the visual language and critical direction of Philippine modern art from the late 20th century onward.
The exhibition presents paintings, sculptures, mixed media works, and works on paper created between 1957 and 2018, many of which have rarely or never been publicly shown to newer generations of artists, students, collectors, and educators.
This is not a retrospective built on market value.
It is an archive guided by instinct, curiosity, and emotional resonance.
An Art Exhibition Rooted in Discovery, Not Fame
Rather than centering on reputation, AVANTI, SEMPRE AVANTI / FORWARD, ALWAYS FORWARD invites visitors into an art world defined by surprise, experimentation, and wonder. The works on display were intuitively selected from Galleria Duemila’s extensive archive—pieces that once compelled Silvana Ancellotti-Diaz to advocate for Philippine modern art with unwavering belief.
The result is an exhibition that feels less like a museum survey and more like a living conversation—one that resists hierarchy and encourages close looking.
Featured Masters of Philippine Modern Art
The exhibition brings together a significant roster of artists whose practices span abstraction, figuration, conceptual art, and material experimentation. Among the featured artists are:
Pacita Abad, Jose Joya, Cesar Legaspi, H.R. Ocampo, Arturo Luz, Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera, Lee Aguinaldo, Roberto “Bobby” Chabet, Santiago Bose, Junyee, Impy Pilapil, Juvenal Sanso, Malang Santos, Manuel Ocampo, Agnes Arellano, Julie Lluch, Betsy Westendorp, and many others.
Seen together, their works reveal the depth, diversity, and unresolved tensions that continue to define Philippine modern art.
Public Programs: Walk-Throughs and Panel Discussions
In conjunction with the exhibition, public walk-throughs and panel discussions featuring writers and artists will be held from January to March 2026. These programs reinforce Galleria Duemila’s long-standing commitment to education, dialogue, and critical engagement with art history and contemporary practice.
About Galleria Duemila
Since its establishment in 1975, Galleria Duemila has been dedicated to the promotion and preservation of modern and contemporary Philippine art. Its services include conservation and restoration of artworks from the 16th century to the present, as well as consultation, commissions, and installations.
The gallery holds rare works by major figures such as Fernando Amorsolo, Fernando Zóbel, Vicente Manansala, Jose Joya, H.R. Ocampo, and Cesar Legaspi, while continuing to support artists from succeeding generations.
Forward, Always Forward
At fifty years, Galleria Duemila does not look backward to declare completion. Instead, it reiterates a guiding principle that has sustained it for half a century:
That art must provoke curiosity before comfort.
That relationships matter more than trends.
That archives exist not to conclude history, but to extend it.
AVANTI, SEMPRE AVANTI / FORWARD, ALWAYS FORWARD is not an endpoint.
It is a continuation—intentional, generous, and unresolved.
