Red Turnip Theater Closes Its Fourth Season With Sci-Fi Thriller "The Nether"

Red Turnip Theater Closes Its Fourth Season With Sci-Fi Thriller "The Nether"
Fresh off the critical success of their last outing, the family comedy-drama Tribes , Red Turnip Theater is ready to take audiences into a different theater experience with the sci-fi thriller THE NETHER. Ever since making their debut four years ago, Red Turnip has already made quite the dent in the local theater scene. By sticking to their vision of producing contemporary straight plays, this young company has almost single-handedly paved the way for the straight play to find equal footing in a landscape formerly dominated by the musical. Younger companies have sprouted and followed suit and there are now more text-driven plays getting produced than ever before. Each of the Red Turnip’s eight productions has gone on to top critics’ lists and garner awards and nominations from both the Aliw and Gawad Buhay Awards, making this company the go-to for outstanding plays that both entertain and move. Their Fourth Season’s grand finale is THE NETHER, a sci-fi crime drama about the ...

Red Turnip Theater's Fourth Season Gets Stripped Down And Straight To The Point

Red Turnip Theater's Fourth Season Gets Stripped Down And Straight To The Point
In just three years, Red Turnip Theater has changed the landscape of the commercial theatre scene, proving that the straight play has always been suited to Filipino audiences’ tastes, provided that the content and form are of top-notch quality. Red Turnip Theater now mounts their most captivating season yet, kicking the Fourth Season off with the offbeat love story TRIBES and closing it with the sci-fi thriller THE NETHER. Both plays are powerfully written by the first female playwrights in the Red Turnip roster: award winners Nina Raine and Jennifer Haley, respectively. Last season, Red Turnip travelled outwards, exploring not only different countries but time and space in the critically acclaimed productions of “33 Variations” and “Constellations”. This year Red Turnip returns to its roots, going back to what it does best: journeying inwards. In TRIBES, a deaf young man tries to find his voice in a comically loquacious, anti-sign language family that just wants to make him fe...

Immerse Yourself In the Soul-Expanding Experience that is Constellations

Immerse Yourself In the Soul-Expanding Experience that is Constellations
What was the last decision that you have taken for granted? As simple as what that could have been, maybe, just maybe, that extra five minutes you took before getting out of bed, that playlist choice for your morning ride, or the restaurant you chose your lunch, maybe one of those could have significantly altered the coming days, months, years. Constellations is a play written by Nick Payne that explores the infinite multiverse. Two people meet and you are presented with multiple flavors of loving, hurting, breaking down, affliction, clarity, uncertainties. Scenes from the lives of Roland and Marianne, brilliantly played by JC Santos and Cris Villonco, play and replay with variations of what could have beens. In one variation, Marianne could be bitchy, in the other Roland could have coy, in yet another Marianne appeared to be shy, Roland a bit apprehensive. The excellence of Rem Zamora's directing shine in how flawless the "life snippets" transitioned even as the ...

This Was My Youth, Maybe

This Was My Youth, Maybe
Currently playing: Herman’s Hermits tracks. I’ve always had this perception that Red Turnip Theater is the leading Philippine theater company for Off-Broadway plays. I have never been disappointed and last night’s preview of This Is Our Youth certainly delivered. Right smack in the middle of their third season, Red Turnip Theater goes unconventional with RT 0.5 by choosing a smaller venue to actually make things bigger for the audience. With A Space_Gallery at 110 Legazpi Street, Makati, things have become smaller, more comfortably intimate, and even pleasurably relatable. RT 0.5’s first offering, This Is Our Youth, will open November 6, 8PM and will run until November 22. Tickets are selling fast! The opening night is sold out already. This Is Our Youth originally opened Off-Broadway, 1996 and it tells the story of 3 faces of the youth in the time of Raegan’s presidency. The writer Kenneth Lonergen, has written such a wonderful script that it transcends even to the pr...

Red Turnip Theater Shakes Up Its Third Season By Going Miniscule!
Red Turnip Theater has produced five plays since 2013: Closer (by Patrick Marber), Cock (by Mike Bartlett), Pulitzer Prize winner Rabbit Hole (by David Linsay-Abaire), Pulitzer Prize nominee Time Stands Still (by Donald Margulies), and 33 Variations (by Moisés Kaufman). Now in the middle of its third season, Red Turnip’s drive remains just as strong. They are intent on delivering plays that are focused on wonderfully written text and great ensemble acting. For its mid-season offering they are launching a bite-sized Turnip experience, featuring an electric cast and an exciting new space (A SPACE_GALLERY) --- a mid-season curveball that is sure to become this year's pint-sized, comic surprise. Presenting, Red Turnip Theater’s, RT 0.5 Series. Jenny Jamora, “We took a risk when we decided to do 33 Variations. It was our biggest production so far and we certainly have no regrets. With the 0.5 series, we wanted to take on, not just a different space, but an even more intim...
